Work Hours

1) We are seeking a full-time (36 hours/week) Ophthalmic Assistant to work weekdays between 7:30am and 5:30pm at our eye clinics.

Job Summary

Providing ophthalmic treatment and preventative outpatient care to all age populations working in collaboration with the ophthalmologist

Essential Job Functions

  1. Manages patient flow and performs rooming standards.
  2. Assists providers in the examination and treatment of patients.
  3. Performs and documents visual fields, OCTs, NCTs, and other testing as ordered by OD’s and MD’s.
  4. Escorts patients to other areas of the department for completion of the examination.
  5. Collects and records accurate telephone information and relays it to provider or technician.
  6. Basic computer scheduling, rescheduling, canceling and coordination of appointment.
  7. Provides patient education under direction of provider.
  8. Neutralizes and records spectacle prescription by the means of an automatic or manual lensometer.
  9. Initiates documentation of the patient’s chief complaint, history of present illness, review of systems and all pertinent ocular findings accurately and in accordance with compliance guidelines.Measure and record vital signs including blood pressure, pulse and respirations. Document medication and allergies, including reactions. Administer topical ophthalmic and oral medications at the direction of the provider.
  10. Performs and documents additional ancillary testing procedures including facial abnormalities associated with eye problems, records gross external abnormalities from the examination, performs potential acuity measurement (PAM) and brightness acuity test (BAT) and records information and all other patient services as requested by the ophthalmic provider.
  11. Performs testing to include visual acuity measurement, stereo vision testing, color vision testing, automated or manual lensometry and keratometry, measurement of intraocular pressure (IOP) by use of NCT, Tonopen or Goldman, check pupillary size and response to direct and consensual light.
  12. Screen patients and calls for emergency/urgent situations; obtain pertinent information for provider.
  13. Must have a good general knowledge of contact lenses.
  14. Assist ophthalmologist in laser (YAG, ARGON or EXCIMER) procedures by preparing equipment and assisting patients for position and comfort, record surgical information required.
  15. Performs additional medical responsibilities assigned by the provider, who supervises and assumes legal responsibility for these actions.
  16. Orders and maintains supplies and material needed in the assigned work area.
  17. Cleans exam rooms at the end of the day and check inventory for expired items.
  18. Adheres to Southwest Health’s value-based behavior standards.
  19. Understands and adheres to Southwest Health compliance and HIPAA standards as they appear in the Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.
  20. Performs other duties and responsibilities as requested or required.
