Laboratory Technician

SHIFT: Monday – Friday  7a.m. – 3p.m.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

Supports the overall facility quality assurance program and the specialized positions within the department.

ESSENTIAL POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES (This is a Salary Non-exempt position)

Conducts in plant analysis and in facility audit of production / quality records as determined by the Quality Manager. Ensures sample collection and analysis for various post process measurements, including primary and secondary packaging, product evaluation, sample library management, collection of samples for product deviation evaluation and the incubation program. Collects samples for outside laboratory analysis and customer positive release program. Responsible for conducting post process examination on samples and reporting all deviations to the Quality Manager.

Administers sample collection in accordance with facility sampling program, including post process panels, external analysis, customer positive release, incubation, product deviations, and sample retains. Responsible for the review of Finished Goods and Raw Material Analysis for compliance. Collaborates with R-D to ensure Finished Product Specifications are up to date and correct. Reporting, Evaluations – Tests. Inputs Quality line check data, external laboratory results and panel/internal analysis results into system. Compiles, sorts and verifies accuracy of data to be entered. Conducts required post process evaluations, including standard post process samples, incubation and product deviations. Conducts daily calibrations related to tests performed. Uses spreadsheet program to enter and save numerical data. Manages information including editing, creating, manipulating, entering and retrieving data from databases. Creates reports to communicate information to other departments.

Physical Activities: Enters and locates information on a computer. Visually verifies information, often in small print. Communicates with Customers, Vendors, or Employees via telephone, in person, and/or electronic mail. May present information to small or large groups. Must be able to work in various temperatures. Move about in a manufacturing environment and surrounding property. May travel via car or plane to various work locations.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): As required by visiting facility.

Travel: Travels is very limited, domestically to and from facilities or work-sites, possibly requiring some overnight stays.

Technical Experience: Some Quality Assurance or Quality Control experience preferred. Working knowledge of current laboratory procedures, HACCP principles and plant GMPs. Computer skills including functional knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Gmail. Thermal Processing knowledge – double seam knowledge required if the position supports a Pet Food facility. Industry

Experience: Preference for food processing organization. Minimum Education: High School diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Education: Bachelor’s or 2-year degree in Food Science, Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry or related field or some college level Science courses (i.e. general chemistry).

Description:

Using a variety of procedures and test methodology, independently performs clinical laboratory analysis on biological specimens and provides technical expertise and information to our clients. Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance and/or results and uses knowledge, critical thinking skills, and judgment to troubleshoot and resolve them. Consults with director, supervisors, and pathologists when appropriate.

  • Performs other duties consistent with purpose of job as directed. Independently performs analysis, to include waived, and moderate, complexity testing, on clinical laboratory specimens to provide timely and accurate diagnostic information to healthcare providers.

  • Monitors the collection, transportation, storage, identification, and processing of specimens to ensure specimen integrity prior to testing.

  • Takes appropriate action if acceptable criteria are not met. Recognizes deviation from expected results, analyzes and corrects problems using scientific principles and laboratory policies.

  • Responsible for operation, calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of laboratory instrumentation. Communicates problems to appropriate staff members.

  • Analyze and document quality control data, makes judgments concerning the results, and takes appropriate action to maintain test accuracy and precision.

  • Works independently and organizes work to meet established guidelines and records, such as turn-around times, while maintaining patient confidentiality.

  • Adheres to written laboratory policies and procedures, personnel policies, and administrative policies.  Also performs work activities in a manner that ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements.

  • Follows safe work practices by observing safety and infection control policies and procedures, informing management of any hazards that may exist, and assisting in corrective action.

  • Maintain flexibility with laboratory scheduling to help fulfill staffing requirements.

  • Perform phlebotomy and clerical duties as required.

  • Interact with hospital staff, physicians, and clients in a professional manner.

  • Actively participates in departmental meetings, in-services, and other continuing education to keep abreast of new technologies and changes in the lab. Maintain an adequate level of supply inventories.

  • Participates in writing, revising, and reviewing laboratory policies and procedures.

  • Serves on laboratory committees as requested by a supervisor.

  • Performs other related tasks as delegated by a supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in a science-related field such as a biological, chemical, or medical laboratory science program from an accredited institution preferred.
  • High School diploma required.
  • Demonstrates professionalism and teamwork.  
  • Has knowledge of and can operate laboratory related computer software and systems.
  • Child and Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training is required within 6 months of hire and every 3 years thereafter.

  • Greet and assist patients/customers in person and on the phone in a professional and confidential manner 

  • Communicate effectively with colleagues and customers alike, being a good listener and adjusting style as needed 

  • Represent MercyOne Retail Pharmacies in a courteous, friendly, and caring manner 

  • Perform duties with flexibility, adapting to changing schedules and needs of the customers, prioritizing workload accordingly 

  • Operate cash register accurately, including cash, credit card, in store charges and payments on account 

  • Assist with all aspects of inventory control: ordering, receiving, stocking, returning, and additional drug inventory control duties, including checking pharmacy stock shelves for outdated drugs

  • Ensure that pharmacists are providing all patient counseling, consultation, and any other activities that involve professional judgment 

  • File prescriptions or other paperwork, stocks bottles and vials and performs other clerical duties as necessary or requested 

  • Collect accurate patient demographic, allergy and medication data from patients and caregivers 

  • Utilize pharmacy dispensing software to accurately input patient and third-party information, and process new and refill prescriptions following safety procedures to ensure pharmacist involvement in any process that would involve professional judgment 

  • Package and label prescriptions for final verification of pharmacist in an organized and highly accurate manner 

  • Contact prescribers to obtain prescription refill authorization 

  • Accept prescription refill authorizations communicated to the pharmacy by a prescriber or the prescriber’s representative – at the discretion of the supervising pharmacist, and after receiving appropriate training, may accept new prescription drug orders or medication orders communicated to the pharmacy by a prescriber or the prescriber’s agent

  • Perform drug compounding processes for nonsterile compounding as provided by Iowa Pharmacy Law after appropriate training

  • Contact 3rd party payers or physician offices as appropriate to resolve third party prescription payment issues (including prior authorization, step therapy, processing questions etc) 

  • Actively participate in quality, safety, and problem-solving activities with other pharmacy staff and hospital/clinic departments

  • Must be 18 years of age or older 

  • Registration with Iowa Board of Pharmacy within 30 days of employment

  • Must be capable of managing multiple patients requiring continuous cardiac monitoring.  

  • Provides appropriate interventions for patients experiencing cardiac events or changes in rhythm.  

  • May be required to assist with data collection and quality improvement initiatives. 

  • Must be willing to serve as a resource to other hospital services (nursing, pharmacy, laboratory, radiology, respiratory, etc.).  

  • May be asked to participate in unit-based committees and provide education to nursing staff as requested. 

8. Based on principles of growth and development, provides care appropriate to the age-related needs of the patients served on his/her assigned unit.

General Requirements: 

The Virtual Registered Nurse (RN) is a member of the Nursing Care Team and is responsible for collaboration, communication & facilitation of optimal provision of care through a computerized &/or digital platform supporting daily management of care.  

  • Responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, coordination, monitoring & evaluation of the patient’s plan of care from admission to discharge.  

  • Utilizes clinical knowledge, critical thinking skills & the principles of case management & adult education to coordinate, implement & support the plan of care.   

  • Ensures a seamless, effective, efficient transition of care across the continuum.  

  • Responsible for monitoring quality metrics specific to the department & ensuring complete & accurate documentation in the patient record.  

  • Performs the roles: 1) mentor; 2) clinician; 3) educator; 4) consultant / collaborator; and 5) navigator.  

 

Assignment Minimum Qualifications (required) 

Minimum five (5) years of equivalent experience in health condition management in an adult acute care clinical setting with direct patient care experience within the last 10 yearsClinical information systems experience (e.g., EHR).

Education: 

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred or within 4 years of hire.

  • Must be a registered nurse and must hold an active license to practice nursing in the State of Iowa.

  • Certification by a nationally recognized nursing organization is preferred and strongly encouraged.

  • The registered nurse continuously seeks opportunities to enhance his or her own professional nursing practiceMembership in an appropriate professional nursing organization is recommended.

  • Child and Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training is required within 6 months of hire and every 3 years thereafter.

As a Registered Nurse at MercyOne, you will provide and direct safe, effective, and culturally competent care for patients with acute medical and surgical conditions. Through evidence-based practice, utilizes critical thinking to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate outcome-based care. The Acute Care RN manages a diverse patient population with varying levels of acuity, including post-operative, medical, telemetry, and neurologic patients. Supervises and coordinates care provided by LPNs, Patient Care Assistants, and other nursing team members. Facilitates communication with physicians, patients and families, and interdisciplinary team members. Essential Functions:

1. Conducts an initial assessment to gather data. 

  • Makes an initial assessment of new admissions within 30 minutes of the patient’s arrival to the unit. 

  • Completes all areas of the admission assessment database within 24 hours of admission.

2. Identifies patient problems and develops them into an outcome/goal-based plan of care. 

  • Initiates the patient problem list and incorporates relevant medical history into the plan of care. 

  • Analyzes and interprets the assessment data to identify desired patient outcomes/goals. 

  • Determines nursing interventions to achieve those outcomes/goals. 

  • Prioritizes patient care needs/ activities. 

  • Identifies and makes appropriate referrals (i.e., Patient/Family Services, Nutritional Services, Spiritual Care, Diabetic Educator, etc.), and education needs. 

  • Collaborates with other health care disciplines to plan interventions/ patient outcomes/goals. 

3. Implements the outcome/goal- based plan of care. 

  • Assigns and coordinates patient care incorporating patient acuity and the skills, knowledge and abilities of the team members. 

  • Organizes and prioritizes care for the patients within the team. 

  • Delegates tasks appropriately to other team members. 

  • Implements the plan of care including procedures, treatments, physicians orders, nursing orders, education plan and medications. 

  • Coordinates implementation of plan of care with the Case Manager, Social Worker and other health care disciplines. 

  • Assists to decrease the patient’s length of stay by helping the patient and family identify and secure appropriate services to satisfy health-related needs upon discharge. 

  • Uses nursing judgment to determine the appropriate frequency and components of reassessment. 

  • Reassesses at regular intervals to determine patient response(s) to interventions (minimum RN reassessment every 24 hours). 

  • Focuses ongoing reassessment on actual and potential problems/needs of the patient including education and discharge needs. 

  • Participates in develop discharge plan.  

  • Documents discharge instructions for patient and/or significant other and/or other care provider.   

4. Evaluates patient progress and revises the outcome/goal-based plan as needed. 

  • Evaluates patient response(s) to interventions. 

  • Review/modifies/revises the outcome-based plan of care based on ongoing reassessments. 

  • Updates the problem list and outcomes/goals. 

5. Communicates relevant clinical information to the team to optimize patient outcomes/goals. 

  • Communicates relevant clinical information to physicians regarding the patient’s condition. 

  • Reports progress toward outcomes/goals and/or changes in condition to other health team members. 

  • Maintains ongoing communication with interdisciplinary team members throughout the shift, at shift change, and transfer of care. 

  • Communicates with other team leaders and members throughout the shift to reassess and prioritize the needs of the unit. 

  • Documents completely, comprehensively and legibly and in accordance with policy. 

6. Demonstrates clinical competence. 

  • Utilizes Patient Care Policies and Procedure as references to guide nursing practice. 

  • Assures medication safety by following the “5 Rights” of medication administration. 

  • Prioritizes and implements intervention according to patient assessment. 

  • Demonstrates competency in computer systems and applications required for role. 

  • Receives, transcribes and processes and implements physician orders per policy including dating, timing and verifying accuracy. 

  • Maintains communication with the manager/house supervisor and staffing office regarding admissions, unit needs, acuity numbers and significant events. 

  • Completes assigned shift duties and assures resolution of discrepancies. 

7. Manages telemetry and cardiac monitoring when applicable. 

  • Demonstrates clinical competency and technical knowledge in cardiac rhythm interpretation and telemetry monitoring.  

  • Recognizes and responds appropriately to cardiac arrhythmias and other changes in patient condition.  

  • Must be capable of managing multiple patients requiring continuous cardiac monitoring.  

  • Provides appropriate interventions for patients experiencing cardiac events or changes in rhythm.  

  • May be required to assist with data collection and quality improvement initiatives. 

  • Must be willing to serve as a resource to other hospital services (nursing, pharmacy, laboratory, radiology, respiratory, etc.).  

  • May be asked to participate in unit-based committees and provide education to nursing staff as requested. 

8. Based on principles of growth and development, provides care appropriate to the age-related needs of the patients served on his/her assigned unit. 

9. Collects, analyzes, interprets and applies age-specific data. 

  • Performs tasks/procedures, uses equipment in an age-appropriate manner. 

  • Communicates and works with others in an age-appropriate manner. 

10. Adheres to all safety, infection control and colleague health policies and procedures. 

  • Attends required safety programs. 

  • Appropriately and consistently uses the personal protective equipment required of the job. 

  • Knows and can demonstrate departmental emergency procedures for fire, disaster and other emergency situations. 

  • Reports and removes unsafe equipment/furniture. 

  • Asks for assistance when needed to assure safety for all involved. 

  • Maintains a safe working environment and practices safe working habits. 

11. Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior. 

Schedule: 

  • .9 FTE, 36 hours per week

  • Night shift 6:00 pm – 6:30 am

  • RNs work 12-hour shifts

  • Rotating weekends and holidays

  • This unit self-schedules. Schedules are 6-week blocks

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in nursing required 

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred. 

  • Current Iowa RN license.

  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) required.  

  • American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required only if the unit has telemetry monitoring capabilities.  

  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter – Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within three (3) months of hire.   

  • High language, intermediate to high math, high critical thinking ability.   

  • Basic computer skills required.
