Position Summary
The PLC Maintenance & Automation Lead is responsible for leading, maintaining, and improving industrial automation systems across manufacturing operations. This role ensures the reliability, safety, and performance of PLC-controlled equipment while supporting continuous improvement, food safety, and cooperative values. The position combines hands-on technical expertise with leadership, troubleshooting, and long-term automation strategy.

Key Responsibilities
Automation & PLC Systems
  • Lead the design, programming, maintenance, and troubleshooting of PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or equivalent).
  • Maintain and optimize automation for production lines, packaging, material handling, and utility systems.
  • Develop and manage PLC standards, documentation, and version control.
  • Support equipment upgrades, retrofits, and new system integrations.
  • Ensure system reliability, redundancy, and cybersecurity best practices.
Maintenance & Reliability
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting support for electrical, controls, and automation issues.
  • Partner with maintenance teams to reduce downtime and improve equipment performance.
  • Develop preventive and predictive maintenance strategies for automation systems.
  • Lead root cause analysis (RCA) and corrective action implementation.
Leadership & Collaboration
  • Serve as technical lead and mentor for maintenance technicians and automation staff.
  • Coordinate with Engineering, Quality, Safety, and Production teams.
  • Support training initiatives to raise automation and controls competency across the plant.
  • Act as the primary automation contact for vendors, integrators, and contractors.
 
Compliance, Safety & Quality
  • Ensure automation systems comply with food safety, GMP, OSHA, and electrical codes.
  • Support validation and documentation for regulated manufacturing environments.
  • Promote safe work practices and lockout/tagout compliance.
  • Align automation improvements with sustainability and cooperative values.
Continuous Improvement & Strategy
  • Identify opportunities for automation efficiency, energy reduction, and waste minimization.
  • Support capital projects and long-term automation roadmap development.
  • Stay current on emerging automation technologies and best practices.
Required Qualifications
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 5+ years of industrial automation and PLC experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong hands-on experience with PLC programming, troubleshooting, and HMI development.
  • Solid understanding of industrial networks, VFDs, sensors, and control panels.
  • Proven ability to lead technical projects and mentor others.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in food, beverage, nutraceutical, or regulated manufacturing.
  • Experience with Allen-Bradley ControlLogix / Studio 5000.
  • Familiarity with SCADA systems and data integration.
  • CMMS experience and reliability-centered maintenance exposure.

Fills and seals can or pouch to meet product specifications.

 

ESSENTIAL POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Runs machine and makes changeovers per scheduling
  • Verify the pouches or lids staged conform to the batch sheet and feed lids or pouches to the seamer.
  • Monitor and record pouch or can information.
  • Run QC inspector samples for seam tear down monitor and record.
  • Verify proper product amounts. Makes adjustments to can or pouch weights per quality control instruction.

Line Unloader – Day Shift

ESSENTIAL POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Verifies that the machine is setup properly. Reviews production schedule.

Brings full retort basket into the Unloader for unloading.

View finished product, checking for image, odor, color, chunks. Checks to see if it looks good and if it is sticking to the can. Pulls sample product for the lab and supervisors. Identify any hold tags and any change-overs.

Watches for product defects such as dented or leaking product; pull defected product out of the system at the unloader. Looks for product with no codes or illegible codes.

Communicates with the Retort Operator, Tray Packers and supervisors. Ensures baskets cycle to the loader.

Verify that all suction cups are in good operating condition.

Perform weekly sanitation.

 Kitchen operator is a final check for Q.C and supervisor- must notify Q.C and supervisor of anything unusual; i.e. batch too thick, too thin, off-color, off odor.

 Follow formula guidelines, which are listed, on each batch sheet.

 Record batching information for each batch made on formula kitchen sheets. These include gravy weight, water level, water temp, tri-blender R.P.M.’s final batch weight, fill temps and additives.

 Clean and sanitize entire kitchen during can size changeovers or when notified by Supervisor.

 Follow rinse procedures for cleaning the emulsifier and tanks 1, 2, & 3.

 Regulate the dropping temperature, as required. Follow batch sheet guidelines or Supervisor instructions.

 Participates as a member of the Team. Participates in ongoing development, communication and implementation of team concepts, programs, and policies; coordinates work to ensure B.E.S.T practices with all team members. Attends appropriate team meetings. ESSENTIAL POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

 Ensuring leads are aware of any changes for Trays Can size, Can codes, Schedule order

 Inspect cans for; label alignment, can codes, UPC, dents, droops and all other can defects

 Strip improper labels with hands and cutting utensil

 Notify supervisor and maintenance of any mechanical problems or potential problems

 Notify Tray Packer operator of label or code changes

 Monitor and ensure proper label adhesion

 Assist with can changeovers.

 Manage down time for cleanup.

 Verify that the can code matches the schedule and labels.

 Communicate changeovers with Unloader/Brite Stacker operators.

 Communicate with Palletizer operator to ensure proper pallet count.

 Perform weekly sanitation.

Documents numbers and codes per pallet. Creates label for pallet.
